Just 12 miles southeast of Fairbury on Hwy 8 lies the little town of Steele City, Nebraska along the Little Blue River. The Jefferson County Historical Society owns and maintains four historic buildings that offer visitors a glimpse of Steele City's past - circa 1900 stone blacksmith's shop in working condition, circa 1902 stone livery stable, circa 1880's stone Baptist church and brick bank museum. The buildings are open by appointment and during living history weekends in May and July and the annual Steele City Flea Market and Old Farm Machinery Show in September.

Living History in NebraskaSteele City Livery Barn, Steele City Historic District, Steele City NebraskaEach summer, visitors have three opportunities to visit Steele City during Living History Weekends, held in May, July and September.  Watch old-fashioned crafters demonstrate their arts, from soap making, rug weaving to blacksmithing and wagon repair.  (402) 729-5131.

The first weekend in May kicks off the living history season for this rural community nestled near the Little Blue River in southern Jefferson County. Join us for a delightful experience featuring living history and craft demonstrations, blacksmiths working the forge, and self-guided tours of the buildings that comprise the Steele City Historic District.

Highlights of the weekend will include local blacksmiths demonstrating the age-old skills of metalworking both days in the historic blacksmith shop. Old-fashioned rope making demonstrations will take place on Saturday, and pioneer soap making and basket weaving on Sunday afternoon.
