Avenue of Flags
Every Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veteran’s Day, volunteers erect 320 American flags on the courthouse lawn, creating a beautiful memorial dedicated to deceased veterans. Each cotton flag measures 5’ x 9’ and is a coffin flag, issued by the federal government. The poles, which measure 18’ in length, bear the name of the deceased veteran, next of kin and survivors’ names.
The Avenue of Flags has been displayed since 1990 when the Nebraska Department of Veteran’s Affairs introduced the program as a way for families to honor their deceased service members.
Volunteers are needed each holiday to set up and take down the flags.
Please call Jefferson County Veterans Services Office for information and to volunteer.
