Vote YES to Fix Our Streets on November 4th, Fairbury NebraskaVote YES to Fix Our Streets on November 4th

The Fairbury City Council has moved to adopt Resolution No. 950, which will be submitted to voters at the 2014 General Election on Tuesday, November 4th. It proposes an increase of the Local Sales and Use Tax Rate from 1 1/2% to 2%. This provides for additional revenue from sales tax at the local level for purposes of funding public infrastructure projects. Most cities in Nebraska are still at 1 1/2%, but that is the old limit and there are many potential advantages of increasing it to 2% for Fairbury.

The 1/2% increase in sales tax would provide the financial means for the City to complete a number of the projects that have been on hold due to a lack of available funding, fixing not only potholes but also foundational issues related to the age of the City. It is expected that immediate focus would be placed on repairing Fairbury’s deteriorating streets and the infrastructure beneath them.

Reasoning for this proposal:

  • Fairbury is facing continued revenue shortages.
  • Streets and the infrastructure beneath them are expensive to maintain and repair.
  • Right now the financial burden lies mostly on property owners.
  • The funds generated by this sales tax increase are destined for our streets and infrastructure.
  • Those who use our streets but do not own property will then be sharing some of the costs of maintaining those streets, including visitors and those who trade in Fairbury.
  • 1/2 of a percent sales tax could generate about $230,000 per year for the following projects, for example: 1 and 6 year plan on streets, main thoroughfares, pedestrian safety, and laying good foundations for future generations.
  • This additional revenue could also provide required cash matches for grant applications and be used for the payment of bonds, which further increases the City’s pool of funds and potential for improvement.

Since this is an increase in sales tax, versus property tax, it is a much fairer way to collect the needed funds. It spreads the contributions out over a broader population, including both residents and visitors who use our streets. Property owners already pay a high percentage in taxes, so this program would provide relief from another rise in property tax, while still allowing the City to get things done from an infrastructural standpoint, ultimately helping to improve Fairbury for all.

If you are a registered voter, be sure to head out to the polls on Tuesday, November 4th, and vote YES to fix our streets. For more information, Click Here.
