Stagecoach Mall Antiques and Tasting Room, Fairbury NebraskaFairbury 1st Friday Art Walk
Scheduled For June 7th

The Fairbury First Friday Art Walk is scheduled for Friday, June 7th. Beginning at 5 p.m., galleries in downtown Fairbury will be open to the public. The June First Friday event will feature 5 stops: New Earth Clay Pottery, Lady George and the Dragon, Jefferson County Art Guild, Stagecoach Mall Antiques & Tasting Room and Main Street Center, located at the corner of 5th & E Streets.

Wilke Pottery, Fairbury First Friday Art Walk Featured Artist, Fairbury NebraskaThe featured artist for June is Steve Wilke of Hebron. Wilke graduated from UNK with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education in 1972 and taught art at Holdrege High school from 1972 to 1981 where he also coached basketball. While teaching school at Holdrege he would make an annual trip to Endicott to get clay. He would also make a trip every two years to Fairbury to coach against Charlie Moore and Don Mahlman.

Now retired from Thayer County Bank and living in Hebron, Wilke spends his time substitute teaching, throwing pots, and playing golf. Wilke rekindled his pottery addiction in 2005, and later formed Little Blue River Clay Works. The lower level of his home serves as his studio/gallery, located in Hebron about 100 yards from the Little Blue River. According to Wilke, "The river serves as my source of inspiration."

Wilke's pottery technique is called Western Raku with variations thereof. He predominately uses Endicott Clay for his work. "It's good clay for what I do." Wilke's works will be on display at New Earth Clay pottery throughout the month of June.

The 1st Annual Fairbury First Friday Art Show will also be held at Main Street Center during the June Art Walk. Featured artists from previous First Friday events will be displaying their works. There are many local artists who are participating so there will be a lot of new 2D & 3D art being displayed for this event.  Everyone is encouraged to bring friends and family to enjoy the local talent!
