"First Friday" Art Walk Planned For This Weekend, Fairbury NebraskaFairbury "First Friday" Art Walk
To Be Held August 3rd

August 2012 - Plans are underway for downtown Fairbury’s art galleries and specialty shops, open once again for "First Friday" coming up Friday, August 3rd, 2012. Venues will be opening their doors to visitors from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the "First Friday Art Walk" in historic downtown Fairbury.

The August Art Walk will include 4 stops and participants in the walk will be given punch cards which can be picked up at any of the participating Art Walk locations. With punch cards in hand, visitors are encouraged to visit each stop on the Art Walk to have their card stamped.

Completed cards for August can then be turned in at Stagecoach Mall Antiques & Tasting Room to receive a special gift. All completed cards will then be placed in a drawing for a grand prize. The winner of the July Art Walk Grand Prize, a handcrafted Christmas ornament by Guild member Cheryl McAtee of Endicott, was Marilyn Seggerman of Fairbury.

Erna Beach, First Friday Art Walk Fairbury NebraskaThis month’s featured artist – Erna Beach, Beatrice, NE
The August Art Walk at New Earth Clay Pottery will feature the works of artist, Erna Beach of Beatrice, NE. Beach, an art enthusiast for most of her life, began carving wood 13 years ago after the death of her husband. "Wood carving gave me something to focus on," according to Beach and over the years she has tried "practically everything."

Beach carves different types of wood, using various tools and techniques. "Realistic carving is what I like the best. Birds of prey get pretty technical," she said. Visitors to New Earth Clay Pottery during the August Art Walk will have an opportunity to meet Beach and see a variety of carved items such as whimsical houses & wood spirits and a selection of ultra-high speed carvings of walnut, cherry and maple. Beach also enjoys creating faces and portraits and making custom-made ash boxes and urns. Beach’s works will be on display and for sale at New Earth Clay Pottery throughout the month of August.

New Earth Clay Pottery, First Friday Art Walk Fairbury NebraskaLocated at 515 4th Street, New Earth Clay Pottery features locally made stoneware pottery by Bill Robbins of Fairbury and is Fairbury’s only working pottery. The gallery regularly features (for viewing and for sale) functional stoneware pottery, ceramic art, handmade tiles, jewelry, porcelain, paintings, hand-made paper, photography, sculpture and art glass pieces produced by local & regional artists.

Jefferson County Art Guild, First Friday Art Walk Fairbury NebraskaThe Jefferson County Art Guild is located at 511 5th Street, across the street from the Campbell Bros Circus Mural. On display for show and sale will be works created by members of the Guild. Art Walk participants are invited to stop by to visit with the members and get more information about becoming involved in the Guild, which meets each Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for "paint-ins".

Lady George and The Dragon, First Friday Art Walk Fairbury NebraskaNew to the First Friday line up for August is Lady George and The Dragon, located on the east side of the square at 416 E Street. Owners Georgia Acker and Myron Peak offer something unique for all ages. Visitors to their shop will find a variety of items ranging from bronze sculptures to incense burners and hand-made jewelry. The grand prize for the August Art Walk will be a beautiful necklace, handmade by Acker. The three main stones are aqua terra with aqua terra beads and fresh water pearls. The total length is 18" but can be adjusted longer or shorter to suit the winner’s wishes.

Stagecoach Mall Antiques and Tasting Room, Fairbury NebraskaLocated at 508 E Street, Stagecoach Mall Antiques and Tasting Room will feature the "century-old" brick wall and massive limestone fireplace made entirely of sculpted concrete, created by artist Thom Hunt of BB Studios of Fairbury. For the August Art Walk, Hunt’s work of art will provide the perfect backdrop for a wine-tasting event featuring Superior Estates Winery of Superior, NE, one of Nebraska’s premier wineries. Superior Estates will be offering wines from its popular Tornado Alley series – a selection of hand-crafted, Nebraska-made wines, available for sampling and for sale (must be 21).

The Saucy Cook, First Friday Art Walk Fairbury NebraskaTo compliment the selection of wines, a sampling of gourmet cheeses from the Saucy Cook Gourmet Food and Cheese Shop in Lincoln has been specially selected to be paired with wines offered by Superior Estates Winery. Carol Wells, owner of the Saucy Cook, will travel to Fairbury Friday evening to give attendees an opportunity to learn about and sample a variety of cheeses from around the world. An expanded selection of gourmet food items and spices from The Saucy Cook will also be available at Stagecoach Mall, including a proprietary line of spices, many of which are hard to find.

The Tasting Room will also feature the live blues music featuring Jared & Chris' Good Time Blues, a duo from Lincoln who, according to guitar player Jared Alberico, is dedicated to playing "real deal blues." According to Alberico, "we play blues like it was taught – in the old time style." The guitar/harmonica combo will be entertaining First Friday attendees from 6 – 9 p.m.

A limited number of tickets for the tasting event and live music  at Stagecoach Mall are available for $10 per person by calling Julie Katz at 402.613.2063 or by email at Julie@Fairbury.com. Click Here for purchase tickets. Proceeds from the wine tasting event will benefit local art projects and future First Friday Art Walk events.

Art Walks for upcoming months thru December are scheduled. Everyone is encouraged to come to historic downtown Fairbury on Friday the 3rd of August, beginning at 5 p.m. Enjoy the art, meet the artists and help support the arts in Fairbury!
