Statewide Magazine Features Steele City

NORFOLK, Neb., September 1, 2015 – The September/October 2015 issue of Nebraska Life Magazine features Steele City.

In the 4-page story “Forging Ahead: No Rusting in Steele City,” Nebraska Life’s assistant editor, Alan Bartels, visits the Jefferson County community during its popular Steele City Flea Market and Old Farm Machinery Show. He spent the day and found more than good deals and classic iron. He found a village of a few dozen people that is big on community.

“Four generations of the Starck Family brought nine tractors for the tractor tour, and younger family members ride along in the feed wagon towed behind one of the machines,” Bartels writes in the story. “Family patriarch Roger Starck cranks up his rare John Deere 4000 gas Synchro-Range tractor, one of only 256 built and just one of 20 classic tractors in his collection. ‘These old tractors are like these old buildings here,’ Starck said. ‘They were built right: If you put just a little work into them you get a whole lot of work out of them.’ ”

A block away, next to the Salty Dog Saloon, children propelled pedal tractors with all their might. Adults, even the author of the story, got in on the fun. “Steele City is a welcoming community,” Bartels said. “Despite its small population they really make a big stand for community and family fun in Steele City.”

Read the complete story in the September/October 2015 issue of Nebraska Life. Through November 1, new subscribers mentioning the code TWN9 will receive a complimentary copy of the issue featuring Steele City. The same entertaining issue includes an 11-page photo essay showcasing beautiful Nebraska fall colors, a sudsy tour of six Nebraska breweries making history with their brews, a sticky stack of jam and jelly recipes from the readers of Nebraska Life, horse poetry, Nebraska trivia, a statewide events calendar and more.  The magazine is available on newsstands or by subscription for $24 a year.
