What does the word "Ombudsman" mean?
The word Ombudsman (ombudz-man) is Scandinavian in origin. In the United States, it has come to mean "advocate." What is Long-Term Care Ombudsman?
The Long-Term Care (LTC) Ombudsman Program was established under federal mandate through the Older American's Act. A LTC Ombudsman is an advocate for the rights and well0being of nursing home and assisted-living facility residents.
What services are available through the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program?
Education to infom residents, families, facility staff and others on a variety of issues related to aging, long-term care and residents' rights.
Information and Referrals to empower individuals to resolve concerns and complaints on their own behalf.
Consultation to make recommendations for protecting the rights of residents and improving their care and quality of life.
Individual Advocacy to facilitate the resolution of concerns and complaints and to protect the rights of residents.
Systems Advocacy to identify significant concerns and problematic trends and to advocate for systemic changes that will benefit current and future residents of long-term care facilities.
What is the voluteer Ombudsman Advocacy Program?
Nebraska's State LTC Ombudsman Program also includes Local LTC Ombudsman Programs. These Local Programs are managed by LTC Ombudsman Program Coordinators and provide the opportunity for interested voluteers to become certified LTC Ombudsman Advocates.
Qualfied voluteers are screened, trained and assigned to a specific nursing facility. Voluteers receive initial, as well as continuing education on various aspects of aging and long-term care, investigating and resolving conflicts, and other relevant topics.
Following their training, and initial orientation and the successful completion of a three-month probationary period, voluteers are certified as LTC Ombudsman Advocates. LTC Ombudsman Advocates work with and on behalf of residents, in order to resolve problems and overall quality of life and care.
If you are interested in learning more about Nebraska's LTC Ombudsman Program or would like information about becoming a voluteer, please contact the State Ombudsman Office.
