From humble beginnings, great things can grow. That is the legacy of area agribusiness Knobel Seeds located at 72055 567th Ave. Since its founding in 1980 by father and son, Ralph and Mark Knobel, Knobel Seeds has strived to create quality seed products for its customers and increase profitability at the same time. Beginning from less than 20 acres of certified Oakland soybeans and a few bags of Prairie Valley Hybrids corn and milo seed, Knobel Seeds has evolved into a supplier of virtually all farm seeds and grasses.
Establishing the business, the Knobels saw it as an opportunity to add value to their farm’s production by growing and marketing Nebraska Certified Seed. Soybeans, as a major crop, were just really taking hold in Jefferson County area in the early 1980s. This also brought the newest and best varieties to their farm as well as their neighbors at significant cost savings.
According to Mark Knobel, Knobel Seeds’ mission is to provide the best possible seed for the customers’ needs with bottom line profitability as the primary focal point.
Knobel Seeds now handles significant volumes of certified wheat seed and grasses supplied for conservation work. The hybrid corn retail business has increased significantly and seed treating has grown to be a major component of the seed package offered by Knobel Seeds. Knobel Seeds has sold seed to customers in at least nine states, but most of its customers are within a 150-mile radius.
Mark Knobel takes great pride in being able to fulfill customer needs. “Just about any farm seed or grass seed, we can get. We also contract, grow and condition soybeans, wheat and oat seed. We offer custom conditioning of soybeans and wheat seed for other regional companies and local farmers. Knobel Seeds has also conditioned and packaged food grade white and yellow corn. Custom seed treating is now a major service provided, ” Knobel explained.
The future looks bright for Knobel Seeds as it continues to invest in people and technology. A third generation of the Knobel family has been involved now with Mark’s daughters, Kara, Tracy and Hailey helping with some of the seed conditioning. Since 2014, the business has completely remodeled its seed facility. This renovation included replacing both its large cleaner and gravity table with new, state-of-the-art seed equipment. As Mark added, “This investment will help us supply the highest quality seed to our customers for years to come.”
Knobel Seeds plans to keep growing and keep its customers growing, too. “We will continue to evolve with the agricultural industry trying to supply the best products to help make our customers’ farms profitable,” he said.
