Permits available at Visitor Center - Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, located SE of Fairbury, was an important road ranch, Pony Express Station and Stagecoach stop along the Oregon Trail. Rock Creek Station spans 350 acres of prairie hilltops, timber-studded creek bottoms, and rugged ravines.Here, visitors can still see the deep ruts carved by the wagon trains and learn about Oregon Trail and Pony Express history at the visitor’s center. Reconstruction of the buildings and corrals gives visitors a sense of life on the trail in the late 1850s.Open year round, Rock Creek Station has an excellent interpretive center, picnic areas, hiking and nature trails, tent camping, horse camping and a modern campground with services.Be sure to visit Rock Creek Station during Rock Creek Trail Days each year, the first weekend of June. Check the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission Website for more information about Rock Creek Station or email [email protected].The “Friends of Rock Creek Station” Foundation The “Friends of Rock Creek Station” Foundation . . . was created by a group of individuals who cherish the history and beauty of Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. Aware that funding for state parks and other public programs is often diminished as other demands are made on government budgets, this group organized to create a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation to raise funds to be used to enhance and expand educational and historical programs at the park. This foundation is operated by an elected Board of Directors. The Rock Creek Station Park Superintendent serves as an ex-officio member of the board and works to help the group identify needs and programs to be considered for funding. Emmigrant Experiences . . . in an educational program offered to area fourth graders in the fall. Members of “Friends” dressed in historical clothing offer students the kind of experiences that children would have met along the Oregon Trail as it passed through Nebraska. Schools are not charged for the event and the program helps meet curriculum requirements for Nebraska history studies.
